Wat het is
MOTS-c is een peptide van zestien aminozuren (MRWQEMGYIFYPRKLR) dat niet in het celkerngenoom is gecodeerd maar in het mitochondriale DNA, in een klein leesraam binnen het 12S rRNA-gen. Daarmee hoort het bij een kleine groep die mitochondriaal afgeleide peptiden heet. Molecuulmassa 2174,6 g/mol, CAS 1627580-64-6.
Waar het onderzoek over gaat
De publicatie waarin MOTS-c werd beschreven (Cell Metabolism, 2015) onderzocht het peptide in muizen in relatie tot insulinegevoeligheid en de AMPK-route. Sindsdien wordt het in de literatuur ook bestudeerd als signaalmolecuul tussen mitochondriën en de celkern, en in verband met de folaat-methioninecyclus. Dat onderzoek is overwegend preklinisch: celkweek en diermodellen. MOTS-c is geen geregistreerd geneesmiddel.

Gelyofiliseerd poeder, oplossen met bacteriostatisch water. Ongeopend bij −20 °C, gereconstitueerd bij 2–8 °C. De sequentie bevat twee methionines, die aan de lucht kunnen oxideren: sluit de vial direct. What does 'mitochondrial-derived peptide' mean?
That the code for MOTS-c is located in the mitochondrial DNA, in the 12S rRNA gene, and not in the nuclear genome. It is one of the few peptides for which this has been described.
What is the difference between MOTS-c and SS-31?
MOTS-c is an endogenous peptide of 16 amino acids, encoded in mitochondrial DNA. SS-31 (elamipretide) is a synthetic tetrapeptide that binds to cardiolipin in the inner mitochondrial membrane; they are different substances with their own line of research.
