What it is
Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a glycoprotein hormone of approximately 37,000 daltons (CAS 9002-61-3), composed of two subunits. It shares the alpha subunit with LH, FSH, and TSH; the beta subunit is unique and confers specificity. Due to its size and attached sugar chains, it is not a synthetic peptide but a biological molecule, and it is not listed in the PubChem compound index. The potency is expressed in international units: this vial contains a nominal 5000 IU.
Literature
The literature on hCG originates largely from reproductive medicine and embryology. A review in Obstetrical & Gynecological Survey (2022) provides an overview of the molecule and its functions; the International Journal of Molecular Sciences published a review in the same year regarding its role in early embryogenesis.
