What it is
Melanotan II is a cyclic heptapeptide analogue of α-MSH: Ac-Nle-cyclo[Asp-His-D-Phe-Arg-Trp-Lys]-NH2, 1024,2 g/mol, CAS 121062-08-6. A lactam bridge between aspartic acid and lysine closes the ring; within that ring lies the His-Phe-Arg-Trp core shared by all melanocortin peptides.
How it differs from Melanotan I
Melanotan I (afamelanotide) is linear, consists of thirteen amino acids, and primarily binds to MC1R. Melanotan II is shorter and cyclic, and is described in the literature as a non-selective agonist of the melanocortin receptors MC1R, MC3R, MC4R, and MC5R.
