What it is
Melanotan I is the research name of afamelanotide, [Nle4, D-Phe7]-α-MSH: a linear 13-amino acid analogue of the melanocyte-stimulating hormone α-MSH, 1646.8 g/mol, CAS 75921-69-6. Norleucine at position 4 and D-phenylalanine at position 7 replace the natural amino acids and make the peptide more resistant to enzymatic degradation.
How it differs from Melanotan II
Melanotan I is linear and, in the literature, binds predominantly to the MC1 receptor. Melanotan II is shorter (seven amino acids), cyclic, and targets multiple melanocortin receptors. They are therefore two distinct substances, each with its own research profile, not different strengths of the same product.
Research and registration
Since December 2014, afamelanotide has been authorised in the EU as a medicinal product (an implant) for the prevention of phototoxicity in adult patients with erythropoietic protoporphyria, a rare light sensitivity disorder. In addition, it is discussed in research on vitiligo. That authorisation does not apply to this product: this is research material, not a medicinal product.
