What is L-carnitine?
L-carnitine is a quaternary ammonium compound of 161.20 g/mol (CAS 541-15-1) produced endogenously from lysine and methionine. In biochemistry, its role is transport: carnitine transports long-chain fatty acids across the inner mitochondrial membrane. It is not a peptide.
Research
The literature is extensive and not unambiguous. Review articles describe the metabolic functions of carnitine; a 2020 systematic review discusses both positive and negative findings from supplementation research, including the formation of TMAO by gut bacteria. These studies pertain to dietary supplementation in humans and do not relate to this solution.
