What it is
KPV is the tripeptide lysine-proline-valine, 342.43 g/mol, CAS 67727-97-3. It is the C-terminal fragment 11–13 of α-MSH, melanocyte-stimulating hormone, and is also referred to in the literature as α-MSH(11–13).
What the research focuses on
Interest arises from research into the inflammation-related signaling of α-MSH. Work in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology (2004) investigated KPV alongside the full-length hormone in human keratinocytes and in cells expressing the MC1 receptor. A study in Gastroenterology (2008) describes KPV entering intestinal epithelial cells via the peptide transporter PepT1, and investigated it in cell models and in mouse models of colitis in relation to NF-κB signaling. The recurring question in this literature is whether the short fragment retains activity without the pigmentary activity of the full-length hormone. The research is preclinical; KPV is not an approved drug.

What is the difference between KPV and α-MSH or Melanotan?
KPV is only the final segment of α-MSH: three amino acids (positions 11–13). α-MSH contains thirteen, and Melanotan I and II are modified analogues of that complete hormone; the receptor core His-Phe-Arg-Trp is not present in KPV.
