What it is
Ipamorelin is a synthetic pentapeptide (Aib-His-D-2Nal-D-Phe-Lys-NH2) that acts as a growth hormone secretagogue: it binds to the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a) and thereby triggers growth hormone release in models. Molecular mass 711,9 g/mol, formula C38H49N9O5, CAS 170851-70-4.
Research
The original characterization appeared in 1998 in the European Journal of Endocrinology, under a title that immediately states the distinction: the first selective growth hormone secretagogue. In cell culture and in studies in rats and pigs, it elicited GH release without ACTH and cortisol rising notably, which older secretagogues did show. More recent review literature places it in the broader research field of GH secretagogues and also identifies the gaps in the evidence.

Why is ipamorelin called 'selective'?
In the 1998 study, ipamorelin elicited GH release without ACTH and cortisol rising significantly, in contrast to older secretagogues such as GHRP-6. This selectivity is described in cell and animal studies.
What is the difference with CJC-1295?
CJC-1295 is a GHRH analogue and acts via the GHRH receptor; ipamorelin acts via the ghrelin receptor. They are two different points of action on the same GH axis, which is why they are often discussed side by side in the literature.
