What it is
Glutathione (GSH) is the tripeptide γ-L-glutamyl-L-cysteinylglycine: glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine, 307.33 g/mol, CAS 70-18-8. It is not an exotic research substance but an endogenous molecule found in virtually every cell, in millimolar concentrations. The peptide bond is formed via the side chain of glutamic acid (a γ-linkage), which prevents ordinary peptidases from degrading it.
What the research focuses on
In the literature, glutathione is primarily known as the central intracellular antioxidant and as a cofactor for glutathione peroxidase. Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (2013) describes its synthesis in two ATP-dependent steps; Journal of Nutrition (2004) discusses its metabolism; Free Radical Biology and Medicine (2022) covers the role of glutathione peroxidase-1. The ratio between reduced (GSH) and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) is widely used in research as a measure of oxidative stress.

Is this reduced (GSH) or oxidized glutathione (GSSG)?
Reduced glutathione (GSH), the molecule with CAS 70-18-8. GSSG is the oxidized form, in which two GSH molecules are linked via a disulfide bridge.
Why can the measured purity be lower than for other peptides?

How do I store glutathione?
Unopened at −20 °C, dark and dry. After reconstitution at 2–8 °C and dark, and close the vial immediately each time to limit oxidation.
How do I reconstitute glutathione?
With bacteriostatic water along the glass wall, then swirl until clear. The concentration is mg in the vial divided by ml water; the peptide calculator calculates it.
How long is glutathione shelf-stable?
Dry and frozen, months to years. Reconstituted at 2–8 °C typically 28–30 days; a solution oxidizes faster the more often it is exposed to air.
What is the difference with NAD+?
Both are endogenous redox molecules, but of a different class: glutathione is a tripeptide with a thiol group, NAD+ a coenzyme that transfers electrons. In research, GSH/GSSG and NAD+/NADH are often measured alongside each other.
