What is DSIP?
DSIP, in full delta sleep-inducing peptide (INN: emideltide), is a nonapeptide with the sequence Trp-Ala-Gly-Gly-Asp-Ala-Ser-Gly-Glu (WAGGDASGE). The molecular formula is C35H48N10O15, the molecular mass 848,8 g/mol and the CAS number 62568-57-4. The peptide was described in the 1970s following isolation from the blood of rabbits during sleep; the name refers to the delta waves in the EEG that were observed at the time.
What is the research about?
The literature on DSIP is largely older work. A review in Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews (1984) describes research in animal models and in humans on sleep and on diverse neurological and physiological processes; European Journal of Anaesthesiology published an overview in 2001. What stands out when reading: the mechanism of action remains unelucidated after decades of research, and the findings regarding sleep are not unequivocal. That is more relevant than the peptide's name might suggest. DSIP is not registered as a medicine anywhere.

What does the name delta sleep-inducing peptide mean?
The name originates from the 1970s, when researchers observed increased delta waves on the EEG in rabbits following exposure to the peptide. Later studies did not provide an unambiguous picture, and the mechanism has still not been elucidated.
