What is thymosin alpha-1?
Thymosin alpha-1 (Tα1), also referred to as thymalfasin as an active substance, is a 28-amino acid peptide originally isolated from thymus tissue. It is N-terminally acetylated: Ac-SDAAVDTSSEITTKDLKEKKEVVEEAEN. The molecular formula is C129H215N33O55, the molecular mass is 3108.3 g/mol, and the CAS number is 62304-98-7.
What is the focus of research?
Tα1 is one of the more extensively studied peptides in immunological research, particularly regarding T-cell responses. An article in Expert Opinion on Biological Therapy (2015) discusses clinical research in chronic hepatitis B, and a review in International Journal of Molecular Sciences (2025) situates it in research on immune system aging. In several countries outside the EU, thymalfasin is registered as a medicine; it is not in the Netherlands, and this product is not a medicine.
Not to be confused with thymosin beta-4
Despite the similar name, thymosin alpha-1 is a different peptide from thymosin beta-4, to which TB-500 is related. They differ in length, sequence, and research field.
