What is SS-31?
SS-31, also known as elamipretide (formerly MTP-131 or Bendavia), is a synthetic tetrapeptide with the structure D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2, where Dmt represents 2′,6′-dimethyltyrosine. The molecular formula is C32H49N9O5, the molecular weight is 639.8 g/mol, and the CAS number (free base) is 736992-21-5.
What is the research about?
In the literature, SS-31 is described as a compound that concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane and interacts with cardiolipin, a phospholipid that contributes to cristae structure. This description derives, among others, from animal models of renal ischemia (2013). Unlike most peptides in this catalog, there is also randomized clinical research: the phase 3 MMPOWER-3 trial (Neurology, 2023) involving 218 participants with primary mitochondrial myopathy did not reach its primary endpoints. A 2025 review provides an overview of structure, mechanism, and ongoing research avenues. In the US, elamipretide received accelerated approval as a drug for a rare genetic disorder in September 2025; this research product is not a drug and does not fall under that scope.
